Syttende Mai kicks-off with a pancake supper, parade begins Sunday afternoon

WESTBY, Wis. (WKBT) - It's been a staple of the Westby community for 50 years, and this year's Syttende Mai celebration kicks off Thursday!

The festival for Norwegian traditions features cultural foods, events, and arts.

Those going to Thursday's kick-off will get a taste of the annual pancake supper, followed by a fireworks display Friday night to commemorate the festival's 50th anniversary. The big Syttende Mai Parade steps-off Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

"Syttende Mai  is Norway's Independence Day, and the direct translation is of that is 'May 17.' We celebrate here in Westby due to our heritage,” said Syttende Mai Princess Katelynn Dunnum.

To celebrate 50 years of festivities, there are also 50 Troll Medallions hidden within the Westby city limits with prizes for each medallion found.
