Yankees Add a New Part (McCutchen) and Get an Old One Back (Sanchez)

Upon learning that McCutchen had cleared waivers, Cashman said, he “immediately engaged” with the Giants’ general manager, Bobby Evans, saying he wanted to make a deal.

“But then they won five out of six games, and there was some hesitancy on their part,” Cashman said. “Then they lost a key game, and Buster Posey needed surgery, and in the last 72 hours it picked up.

“It was a long week, but I’m glad it resolved the way it did. Hopefully he’ll help us.”

Over the last three seasons, McCutchen, 31, has not put up the type of numbers that earned him four top-five finishes in the M.V.P. Award voting from 2012 to 2015 with the Pittsburgh Pirates, but he should provide a significant upgrade for the Yankees. They have been forced to play the journeyman Shane Robinson and infielder Neil Walker in right field — partly to allow Giancarlo Stanton to be the designated hitter while dealing with a sore hamstring.

For the Giants this season, McCutchen hit .255 with 15 home runs and a .772 on-base plus slugging percentage. He comes with a sterling reputation, having won the prestigious Roberto Clemente Award in 2015, in recognition of his sportsmanship and community involvement.

On Saturday, shaving aside, McCutchen indicated he was thrilled to become a Yankee.

“We all know the history here,” he said. “To see the news and to hear it, and I was going to be a Yankee, surreal is the only word I can think of. I feel like a lot of baseball players want to throw the pinstripes on, for who knows how long, just to say you did it.”

McCutchen is aware his role could be reduced to part time when Judge returns, and he said he was fine with that.
