India vs England: England rope in chinaman to counter Kuldeep Yadav threat | Cricket News

BIRMINGHAM: It's not certain whether India would play Kuldeep Yadav in the first Test, but England want to leave no stone unturned in their preparation for the chinaman.

For the last two days of practice ahead of the first Test, the England team management has called up Nottingham-born chinaman Akhil Patel so that they are ready to deal with the Uttar Pradesh spinner. Akhil, incidentally, is the younger brother of England left-arm spinner Samit Patel, who has played six Tests and 36 ODIs for his country.

"They called me to join the England nets a couple of days back and I was very happy to do it. Of course, the idea is to be ready for Kuldeep," Akhil told TOI after England's practice session on Tuesday.

He kept on bowling constantly for two-and-a-half hours with England batting coach Mark Ramprakash telling him the areas to hit. While the English lower-order seemed to be having difficulties in picking him, Joe Root looked pretty comfortable. "Yes, Root was playing me quite well," Akhil added.

Root played Kuldeep quite well in the last two One-Dayers which England won. In both the games, the Test captain scored centuries and didn't have too many difficulties in either going forward or back to the mystery spinner. It seems he has passed on the knowledge to other English players who looked comfortable against Akhil.
